  • Glossopteris was a woody, seedy shrub or tree named for  The Greek description tongue-a description of the shape of the leaves. Some reached an  elevation of 30 m.  It developed throughout the Early Permian (299 million years ago) and persisted throughout  the period to become the dominant species, not becoming extinct until the Permian ends.  In Australia , South Africa , South  America, India and Antarctica, fossils are found.

  • Once the Southern hemisphere continents are reassembled into Gondwanaland s single land mass, the distribution  of these four fossil types shapes linear and consistent patterns of distribution around continental borders.

  • Glossopteris and mesosaurus fossils. This means that these continents are related to each other  as they would not be able to travel far from one continent to the next.
